Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh (MSG) was born in August 15, 1967 in Ganganagar district of Rajasthan, India and became the third chief of Dera Sacha Sauda.

He is known to be a spiritual leader, actor, director, social reformer. From the age of 7, he was introduced into the Dera Sacha Sauda sector when Deyra head Shah Satnam publicly announced the sainthood of Gurmeet and anointed him Ram Rahim.
In 1990, Satnam declared Ram Rahim as his successor and he became the third chief of the DSS group at the age of 23. He had done his schooling in one of his village school. Married to Harjeet Kaur, he has a son and three daughters.
He is known for his political influence and supported Indian National Congress but with emergence of BJP power, his organization supported BJP in Delhi election followed by Bihar election. He had also been actively involved in social work.
His Dera oversees several social programmes like blood donation drives, cholesterol screening, disaster relief and support for tribal communities.
He had commenced a series of sanitation drives and cleanliness campaign and extended his support to the Central Government. He has Deras (ashram) in many locations of India including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi, Chandigarh and Gujrat and these Deras have made close to 16 different records in different categories of the Guinness Book.
It is also believed that Ram Rahim is a versatile singer and had successfully released few Hindi albums like “Love Rab Se”, “Thank You for That”, “Love Charger”.
He is one of the 36 Indian who has a Z- level security and is considered a VVIP and drives a Range Rover SUV. He has more than 50 million followers around the globe.

Why Is He In News Now?
Gurmeet Ram Rahim was convicted in a rape case where two women from his Dera lodged a complaint against him in 2002. He was found guilty by the special CBI court on August 25th. He was immediately taken into custody and on 28th Aug, the quantum of sentence will be declared against him.

Around 200,000 followers gathered in Panchkula before the verdict. Heavy security was deployed across Punjab and Haryana. Mobile and internet services were suspended in Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab for 72 hours. Violence clashes throughout the city between Deyra followers and security forces when Gurmeet Ram Rahim was convicted by the CBI court in Panchkula. Within few hours of the announcement, Dera followers gathered and attacked the channel broadcasters and OB van. Two train stations were set on fire. Curfew was imposed in Sangrur, Punjab and schools were declared to be closed by the district magistrate.
About 30 people got killed and 250 people got injured due to the widespread violence. Police and paramilitary forces tried to control the situation. Dera chief Ram Rahim is now in a special jail in Rohtak and the sentence will be argued through video conferencing on 28th Aug.
PM Modi has urged security officials to work round the clock to maintain peace to restore normalcy. The Government has also assured all possible support that is required.
